Ahmed Al-Gizawi

Ahmed Al-Gizawi is a young Egyptian lawyer and activist, who has travelled to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on Tuesday 17th of April with his wife to perform Ummrah pilgrimage.

Upon their arrival to Jeddah airport, he was shocked by the Saudi decision to arrest him based on a judicial statement in absentia of a one year and 20 skin lashes. It is claimed that the reason for the statement is his criticism to Saudi Monarchial authorities on a TV channel last year and his defense of Egyptian detainees inside Saudi prisons on arbitrary charges.

The Saudi authorities claim that the reason for his detention is that he was smuggling a huge amount of drugs. This reason didn't seem logical for the majority of angry Egyptians, who have seen a lot of mistreatment in Saudi airports.

For unknown reasons the issue is marginalized by the mainstream media and Egyptian authorities, and Al-Gizawi until now remains captive under unknown humanitarian conditions in Saudi prisons. .

Al-Gizawi is one example that the Egyptian revolution is not over yet. Regaining respect of the Egyptian citizen abroad is one key principle that any coming system should keep as a priority.
